Description
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy developed by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan. It was originally created to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) but has since been adapted for other mental health conditions. DBT combines standard cognitive-behavioral techniques for emotion regulation and reality-testing with concepts of distress tolerance, acceptance, and mindful awareness.
Applications of DBT:
- Initially designed for borderline personality disorder (BPD).
- Effective for other conditions such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- Often used in treating individuals with suicidal and self-harming behaviors.
